APC Africa ICT Policy Monitor Project

Share this The APC Africa ICT Policyi Monitor's primary goal project is to enable African civil society organisationsi to engage in information and communication technologies (ICTi) policy development to promote an Information Society based on social justice and human rightsi. The ultimate aim being that governments and policy makers recognise that access to and the use of ICTs is a basic human right.

The Africa ICT Policy for Civil Society projects have been running since 2001, and its objectives of the policy work in Africa are:

  • Raising awareness: Engaging civil societies which have not necessarily been aware of, or involved in advocating for, equitable ICT policy issues – by researching and disseminating essential civil society ICT rights information and tools via internet, in public fora and workshops.
  • Building an online ICT policy clearinghouse: Monitoring and analysing African ICT policy with particular emphasis on policy developments globally, regionally, nationally and locally that affect developing countries’ and marginalised communities' ability to benefit from the information revolution.
  • Capacity building: Empowering civil society organisations to develop ICT policy that meets their needs, and to encourage civil society organizations to lobby for an information society that builds social justice and human rights, at national, regional and global level. Developing the tools that will enable civil society to recognise and advocate for good policy, in collaboration with other civil society actors to take action on ICT policy issues, including active monitoring of existing policy implementation.
