BPFA STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:
1 Ensure that women have equal access to and
full participation in power structures and decision-making.
2 Increase women's ability to participate in
decision-making and leadership.
ICT POTENTIAL:
Women are using emails, chats, online conferences
and cell phones to express their opinions and demands on a rang
of issues at global and local levels. As an interactive tool,
ICTs increase women participation in all aspects of their lives.
Building e-learning and e-commerce opportunities
for women allows greater participation in the decision-making
process, at both local and international levels.
Computers located in public spaces are used
to email public officials, giving suggestions, complaining and
presenting point of view in any issue. Women become part of the
decision-making process.
WHAT GENDER ADVOCATES ARE FIGHTING FOR IN THE
WSIS POLICY DOCUMENTS
(In the Preamble to the WSIS Declaration)
Women's empowerment and their full participation
on the basis of equality in all spheres of society, including
participation in the decision-making process and access to power,
are fundamental for the achievement of equality, development and
peace.
(In the WSIS Plan of Action)
Ensure representation of women at all levels
of ICT-related policy and decision-making processes within governments,
the private sector and civil society.
Include women as leaders and decision-makers
in all planning processes for the Summit.
Encourage the participation of women as members
of national delegations and representatives of civil society and
business by setting targets for delegations to include at least
30 percent women including gender and ICT experts.
