BPFA STRATEGIC OBJECTIVES:
1 Create or strengthen national machineries
and other governmental bodies.
2 Include a gender perspective in laws, public
policies, programmes and projects.
3 Ensure that statistics are collected, compiled
and presented by gender for planning and evaluation purposes.
ICT POTENTIAL:
Women are using community networking (local
computer-based system), to share information, knowledge, and experience
amongst each other in such a way that the existing organizations
in the community are strengthened.
Women are going online to collect, compile and
access statistical data and to mobilize campaigns for disaggregated
data on issues of common concern.
Rural radio broadcasting programs, combined
with cell phones, are enabling women with minimum reading and
writing abilities and living in remote areas to connect with government
offices to request/demand services.
WHAT GENDER ADVOCATES ARE FIGHTING FOR IN THE
WSIS POLICY DOCUMENTS
Strengthen national machineries for the advancement
of women, particularly through increased financial resources and
technical expertise that can facilitate their advocacy role and
collaborative action amongst government bodies.
Make mandatory the collection and accessibility
of sex-disaggregated data and the development of gender-sensitive
indicators in the access, use and impact of ICTs.
Ensure that planning for, and implementation
of e-governance is gender-responsive.
Support the strategic use of traditional and
new ICTs to strengthen women's networking initiatives and community-based
activities that defend the rights of women to participate equally
in civil and public life.
Include content about women and gender issues
in all official Government websites in addition to those websites
that specifically cover gender equality issues. National machineries
for the advancement of women should be financed and able to maintain
their own websites in addition to supplying gender equity content
for all government websites.
