Drawing on findings from APC's MDG3i: Take Back the Tech!i project with women's rightsi organisations in twelve countries in Asia, Africa and Latin America, this paper explores the links between the interneti, cell phones and violence against womeni and illustrates that technology related violence impacts women as seriously as other forms of violence.

Lenlen Mesina is an passionate advocate for the advancement of women and women’s rights. Between 2009-2011, she worked as the Coordinator of the Take Back the Tech! To End VAW in the Philippines.

"New spaces made available to women in the digital world are also becoming spaces for violence against womeni to occur", notes Lenlen in her feminist talk. In her article, she outlines some of these new emergent forms of violence against women in the Philippines, in the hope of raising awareness and engendering appropriate responses from all stakeholders.

SOS SMS

The SOS Short Messaging System has been set up by the Philippines Center for Migrant Advocacyi (CMA) to help overseas foreign workers (OFWs) in distress (SOS SMS). It is 24 hours, 7 days a week (24/7) text-based ICTi service conceptualized and developed by OFWs and implemented in cooperation with the various CMA partner NGOs worldwide. All the OFW needs is access to a mobile phone, and they can have a service with near-instantaneous, inexpensive, 24/7 reporting of OFW cases from practically anywhere.

Foundation for Media Alternatives

The Foundation for Media Alternatives (FMA) is a non-governmenti organization based in the Philippines, formed in 1986. FMA seeks to enhance the popularisation and social marketing of development-oriented issues and campaigns through media-related interventions, social communication projects, and cultural work.

WomensHub is a Philippines-based organisation of women who undertakes initiatives to promote greater access to ICTi by communities struggling to assert their autonomy and empowermenti.

Mainstreaming Gender Issues in ICT Policy Development - Draft

This is a draft copy of a research conducted by FMA to look into gender mainstreamingi efforts in ICT policyi development. in the Philippines. In particular, Section 4 of the research is culled to demonstrate and examine ICTi policy in the current Philippines context, with attention to the inclusion of gender within its processes.
