Mardiya Siba Yahaya
Mardiya Siba Yahaya is currently a Mandela Rhodes Scholar studying a Master’s in Sociology at the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg. Her work as a feminist researcher and storyteller focuses on analysing the internet and its cultures from gendered, sexuality and religious margins. Her mission is to promote grassroots feminist digital development. She is currently investigating digital surveillance in the Muslim community and its influence on Muslim women’s participation on the internet.
The article argues that digital surveillance is part of gendered and racist disciplinary structures, that manifest in specific forms of online gender-based violence experienced by black Muslim women influencers.
