GenderIT.org team is covering the first meeting of the Internet
Governance Forum (IGF) in Athens, stated by the UN and many ICT policy
advocates as “one of the most significant outcomes of the World Summit
on Information Society”.

Events that accompanied the production of this edition demonstrated, more than ever, that space to freely communicate, access information, and engage in democratic processes is narrowing in some countries. In the context of these events, two interviewees from Iran and Egypt had to cancel the interviews because of emergencies in their countries. This edition not only reflects on gender and freedom of expression and information, but also calls for a renewed commitment to these fundamental rights.

GenderIT.org writers explores the current and changing of the Gender and ICT policy making environment; with articles and interviews of women advocates pioneering in this field. In this edition, Mavic Cabrera-Balleza from the International Women's Tribune Centre also shares her reflections on challenges and recommendations on the strategic use of ICTs in addressing the issue of women in peacebuilding.

This edition explores how FLOSS benefits women, and why there are so few women using FLOSS and participating in existing FLOSS communities. It also brings an interview with Olga Paz, administrative and project coordinator at Colnodo, a Colombian member of APC, on the inclusion of the gender perspective in ICT policy.

We carry articles, news, podcasts, videos, comics and blogs on internet policy and cultures from a feminist and intersectional perspective, privileging voices and expressions from Africa, Asia, Latin America, Arabic-speaking countries and parts of Eastern Europe.
